Texas Potjie celebrated their 15th anniversary last year. It started in 2000 when Fred and Yvonne Reinhardt invited some people to celebrate Thanksgiving with them. The South African community in Houston has shown interest to come together each year. Last year Fred and Yvonne retired as committee members for health reasons, but they plan to keep attending the festival. The committee members are responsible for all arrangements.

Every year during Labor Day Weekend, the first weekend in September, people are excited to attend Texas Potjie! They come from all over America, some from South Africa and last year there were even South Africans from Australia. However, most people are from Texas. The biggest attraction is our culture. People look forward to speaking Afrikaans, lighting a fire, having a braai and eating real Boere treats such as biltong, droëwors, boerewors, koeksisters, fudge, rusks and jaffles, to name just a few. Great successes are the Boeremark, Boeresokkie and Sunday’s Afrikaans church service.

Many people participate as teams in competitions. You will hear names like Kalahari Kraal, Southern Cross Cookers, Team Zebra, Bakgat Boertjies and Span Tafelberg. On Sunday lots of potjies are made and the camp is silent; you want to inhale deeply to get the wonderful aroma of every pot.

Last year Texas Potjie attracted more than 650 people, but this year we expect a record number of South Africans. It is a four day weekend where we just relax and enjoy the togetherness.
