There is silence in the eye of a tornado – Part 3

It is important that I once again emphasise that I am experiencing a lot more positive than negative things since my return to South Africa. There are a few things that are not so nice though that we are starting to notice, as well as several silly things. An example of the latter is that I could purchase two vehicles within the first month, but only qualified for a cell phone contract after three months!

Egotism on the road is however a bit shocking. In England people literally jump on their brakes when you use your indicator (which is also sometimes dangerous). Over here people accelerate when other road users use their indicator. South Africans are also attracted to overtaking other vehicles on the white lines just like a fly is attracted to cow dung. There’s something in many people’s behaviour that shouts: “If you can’t beat them, join them!” I know for a fact though that it leads to further breakdown of values and standards, and that it consumes valuable emotional energy to think like that, or even worse – to plan it in advance.

Too many murders and news about killings everywhere, especially on the radio and internet news websites. For what? They also continue to exist because people keep listening to them and keep reading them. Rather listen to podcasts (yes, I am subjective), where you listen to what you want and whatever will enrich your life instead of causing fear.

I am leaving you with the following thought: Everyone has a mouthful to say about the mischievous tricks of Zuma and the ANC, but you who are overtaking on the yellow line or the double white line, bribing the traffic official, telling white lies, doing those red-hot cash transactions SARS are not aware of and which you are justifying in your head. How are you different? Or is it acceptable because it is “smaller transgressions”?

We are not Italians who consider their laws as interpretable. Set the example, even if it is only at least for those people that are closest to you. Even more important though, you must try to make a difference regarding those things that you would like to place a bigger focus on. Such behaviour never leads to fear.

Enjoy the rest of your week and remember: Those persisting always win!
