AfriForum\u2019s figures show that 76 farm attacks took place in the second quarter of 2023. The organisation\u2019s Community Safety division verified these figures from April to June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the statistics of the second quarter are compared with the first quarter of 2023, there is a frightening increase in the number of murders that have taken place. AfriForum\u2019s Community Safety division warned with the release of the first quarter\u2019s figures that if criminals are not caught, a possible increase could occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAlthough the number of attacks for the first and second quarter is more or less the same, murders increased by 167% \u2013 from nine in the first quarter to 24 in the second quarter,\u201d says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum\u2019s spokesperson for Community Safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOf all the second quarters over the last five years (since 2019), the second quarter of 2023 recorded the highest number of murders,\u201d says Johan Nortj\u00e9, a researcher at AfriForum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The database of AfriForum\u2019s Community Safety division also shows that in just 15 of the 76 farm attacks recorded for the second quarter, suspects were arrested. There was also an average of 5,85 incidents per week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Broodryk, AfriForum will continue to expand its safety networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe already have 168 neighbourhood and farm watch structures nationwide with around 11 000 trained volunteers who help to secure their communities. Just last week, we saw again how AfriForum\u2019s proto team in Brits caught four farm attackers within an hour and a half after the attack. The more people get involved, the more effective these networks will become,\u201d concludes Broodryk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this reason AfriForum has decided to take the bull by the horns by launching a campaign that focuses on safeguarding farms.
The “Safeguard a farm\u201d campaign will specifically address the following:
\u2022 assessing the safety of farmsteads;
\u2022 basic first-aid training;
\u2022 musketry training; and
\u2022 supplying an analogue radio system, including radio training.
The aim of this campaign is not only to safeguard farms and those living on farms, but also to empower the broader community in specific areas to be able to live freely, safely and prosperously.
