Who is <\/strong>De Afrikander Handelshuis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

De Afrikander Handelshuis (DAH) is the largest Afrikaans online shop.<\/p>\n

How did DAH start?<\/strong><\/p>\n

DAH started in 2013 at a coffee shop in Magnolia Dell in Pretoria. More and more youth were walking around with \u201cNew York\u201d T-shirts instead of \u201cPretoria\u201d shirts and it was time to make Afrikaans associable again. With four T-shirts, a gazebo and a full tank of petrol the journey of DAH started.<\/p>\n

Five years later, after countless agriculture and art festivals, street markets and late nights of folding T-shirts, DAH is the home of true Afrikaans products. Today, DAH\u2019s online shop and physical shop at the Voortrekker Monument consist of much more than T-shirts. With vellies<\/em> (genuine leather shoes), ketties<\/em> (slingshots), tolletjiebrei<\/em>, tin mugs and everything that is Afrikaans, DAH is a borderless home for all who love Afrikaans!<\/p>\n

Where does the name come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1707, Hendrik Biebouw called out: \u2018Ik ben een Afrikander\u2019 (\u2018I am an Afrikaner\u2019), in revolt against the colonial government of the Cape. De Afrikander\u2019s name comes from these words of Hendrik Biebouw where the word \u2018Afrikander\u2019 was used for the first time. It was the moment where Afrikaners turned their faces away from Europe, and toward Africa. This event speaks of a fearless seizing of identity and a deep-rooted pride.
