Regular cross-border travel for legitimate reasons such as work, studies, business or medical care does not affect the validity of the permit, as long as it remains valid and is renewed in time before it expires.

SARS realises that people hate administrative processes and has therefore tried to design the system to make compliance as easy as possible. Information on Customs’ temporary import requirements is available at https://www.sars.gov.za/customs-and-excise/.

The easiest option for travellers with foreign-registered vehicles will be to complete the form online before arriving at the border, but SARS will also still assist people who are unable to do so in advance at border posts. They should just be aware that the process will then take much longer.

Even if travellers have done so in advance, they must still report to Customs at the border for verification, processing and inspection (where required).

SARS emphasises that compliance with this new measure is not optional. Vehicle owners who fail to declare foreign-registered vehicles, or who provide false or insufficient information, will face serious consequences.

More
