It is sometimes the closest thing to the family table where everyone used to sit together.

The family table has grown larger

Emigration doesn’t necessarily change how much families love each other, but it does change how they remain part of each other’s lives.

The quick coffee at Mom’s. The Sunday lunch. The conversation in the kitchen. The kids playing with their nephews and nieces. It doesn’t happen automatically anymore when thousands of kilometres separate you.

That’s why families are finding new ways to share the ordinary things.

A photo of the first snow in Canada. A video of a grandchild’s sports game in Australia. A voice note from South Africa about what Grandma has been up to again. A photo of a birthday cake before the candles are blown out.

It seems like small things, but they carry an important message: You are still part of our lives.

Ordinary things connect people

When family lives far away, contact can easily be limited to birthdays, Christmas, weddings and other big events. But family bonds often live in the everyday events.

“Did you watch the rugby?”

“Guess who got his driver’s license today.”

“Can someone send me Mom’s recipe?”

You may not have been at the birthday table, but you saw the video of the candles being blown out. You couldn’t be at the school concert, but you watched the recording later.

Distance doesn’t disappear, but it gets a little smaller.

Your child’s family relationships may look different

For children growing up abroad, this digital family table matters a lot.

Their everyday life is in their new country. It is where they go to school, make friends, play sports and grow up. So, family in South Africa can easily become people they see mainly during holidays.

That’s why regular, informal contact is important. Grandpa could send funny voice notes. Grandma could help with a recipe on a video call. A cousin in South Africa could be the person a child wants to show off their new rugby jersey to.

Also, let children send voice notes, photos, and messages themselves rather than having all contact go through their parents. This way, they don’t just learn about their family; they start to know their family.

The same goes for grandparents. Photos, videos, and short calls give them a window into their grandchildren’s world, even when they can’t be at every sports game, school day, or birthday.

The secret is not necessarily longer conversations, but more frequent small moments.

Your network doesn’t have to end with your family group

When you emigrate, more than just your address changes. The people who were once part of your everyday support network are suddenly far away. At the same time, you have to find people, services, communities and opportunities in a new country.

That’s where AfriForum Worldwide wants to help build a bridge.

Our goal is to keep South Africans living around the world connected – not only to South Africa, but also to each other.

Through the World Guide you can find South African businesses, services and communities in different countries. On our platforms we share practical information and the experiences of other South Africans who have already walked the path of adaptation. We also support and share opportunities where South Africans abroad can meet each other and build new networks.

This can be especially valuable for families. After all, your child’s new reality doesn’t just consist of the family that lives on WhatsApp. It also consists of the people around you: the new friends you make, the community you become involved in, and the people who understand what it’s like to build a life between countries and families.

AfriForum Worldwide therefore wants to be a place where you can find, connect and share – whether you are looking for a South African business near you, an opportunity where you can meet other South Africans, or simply the experience of someone who understands the same challenges.

Successfully settling in a new country doesn’t mean the ties you left behind have to disappear. You can build a new community while remaining part of a larger network that spans national borders.

Make your family group part of the new normal

If your family is spread across different countries, you don’t have to wait for a special occasion to connect:

Share everyday life. A photo of dinner or a quick voice note can mean more than you think.

Give the children a voice of their own. Let them send photos and messages to grandparents and other family members themselves.

Create a simple rhythm. A regular video call or weekly photo helps make contact part of the routine.

Work around time zones. Use voice notes and videos when everyone cannot be available at the same time.

Share more than just milestones. The first day of school is important, but so is the lost tooth, new bike or cake that came out all crooked.

Also build where you live. Cherish family far away but also find people and communities in your new country who can become part of your new life.

Technology cannot replace a hug, a Sunday lunch or a visit around the same table. It can help ensure that family remain part of ordinary life.

Because sometimes all it takes is a photo, a voice note or that familiar WhatsApp notification:

“Family – check this out …”

And suddenly the family table doesn’t feel quite so far away anymore.

There’s a photo of Mom’s Sunday lunch.
