Important election news: More voting stations for South Africans abroad
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has won an important case in the Electoral Court in the fight for more voting stations abroad in the 2024 general election.
The court has confirmed that South African honorary consulates do in fact qualify as consulates as per Section 33 (3) of the Electoral Act. This paves the way for the opening of more overseas voting stations for the 2024 election.
It is especially important for the thousands of South Africans who live far away from South African embassies or consulates, like in the case of Perth in Australia – approximately 40 000 voters will no longer need to travel to Canberra to cast their votes.
Voters need to move their current voting registration to one of the new voting stations by following the VEC 10 process before 22 April 2024.

More information will follow soon on the new voting stations that have been opened as a result of this ruling. It is important that South Africans abroad stay up to date about the implications of this big change and the necessary processes to follow to be able to vote at a new voting station.
The ruling.
